Sustainable & Ethical Fashion Finds

Someone recently asked me how they can be a conscious consumer when it comes to fashion. The truth is, I’m not an expert — I’m learning more and more about the topic everyday, and trust me, it’s an ongoing education. For most people, buying 100% ethical and conflict-free clothing is not an option. But any little thing we can do to support sustainable brands and live planet-friendly lifestyles is a step in the right direction.

So in honor of Earth Day, I decided to share some of my favorite sustainable fashion brands I’ve discovered and love not only for their aesthetic, but also for their mission.

AMUR

One that I really love is AMUR, a clothing collection created right here in NYC. It was born from the idea that style need not come at the expense of our environment, striking the perfect balance between beauty and goodwill. In fact, their name is an acronym for “A Mindful Use of Resources,” which sums up their brand to a T.

All AMUR’s materials are sustainably sourced, with an emphasis on quality, timeless design in an era where clothing is often conceived as disposable. They use natural textiles, organic cotton and silk, and fibers like hemp and linen, some of which are spun from regenerated textiles. The result is ecological and luxurious all at once, and totally worth the price tag.

DL 1961

One of my all time favorite denim brands DL1961 has both environmental awareness and sustainability woven into the foundation of the brand. Each pair of DL1961 jeans is made from ethically sourced, premium cotton, and water efficient botanic fibers. DL1961 works with globally-recognized, eco-friendly factories. In 2018, the brand contributed nearly 5,000 pounds of excess fabric to FABSCRAP, a non-profit that upcycles commercial textiles. In doing so they saved 73,102.70 pounds of CO2, the equivalent of planting 865 trees. And to top it off they have updated their packaging to a fully recyclable, compostable, and biodegradable kraft paper.

H&M

Something I recently learned is that my go to shop H&M has a capsule conscious spring collection. H&M Conscious Exclusive is a unique project that pushes the boundaries on what fashion is and what it could be. Every spring for the past five years, the capsule collection made from organic and recycled materials has been released in H&M stores around the world.

Allbirds

Allbirds is on a mission to prove that comfort, good design, and sustainability don't have to be mutually exclusive. Serving as a driving force in a new age of sustainable manufacturing, the company crafts products that people feel good in, and good about, using premium natural materials.

Veja Sneakers

If sustainability is important in deciding what you wear on your feet, French brand Veja may just have the most ethical kicks around.
